YOUR TURN: Paranoia still grips politics

Irrational fear has always done funny things to the way people think. Nonetheless, I have to admit I was bowled over reading "It's a matter of Faith: Some GOP Hopefuls insist Obama Muslim" (Aug. 21). The article cited a Pew Poll that found an astounding 31 percent of Republicans - including several local candidates for Congress - claim to believe President Obama is a Muslim.

To help Sun Chronicle readers to understand why some people are doggedly determined not to be confused by irrefutable facts, I recommend an essay by renowned historian Richard Hofstadter, first published in the early 1960s entitled "The Paranoid Style in American Politics."

Our New Senator Totally Understands Why That Guy Flew A Plane Into A Building,

on Bostonist

So, you're new Senator Scott Brown.  You're on Fox News to talk about how horrible the government is, and to get your puss out on national TV in preparation for your 2012 run.  And host Neil Cavuto throws you a soft question, asking you to react to the nutball flying his plane into the IRS offices in Austin.

Do you:
(a) express sympathy for the families, admit that there are some cracked individuals out there, and move on to another subject?

(b) say all the facts aren't in and you don't want to comment until we know more?

(c) express sympathy for the families, then compare the pilot's state of mind to that of your supporters?

brown ’s first vote

WASHINGTON - Senator Scott Brown accelerated his swearing-in last week to make sure he could have a say on key pending legislation. But by the time he cast his first vote on the Senate floor yesterday, much of that drama had evaporated.

Brown, whose election to replace the late senator Edward M. Kennedy gave the GOP the crucial 41st vote it needed to block Democratic legislation, joined Republicans in their successful move to halt President Obama’s appointment of a union lawyer, Craig Becker, to the National Labor Relations Board, which certifies unions and resolves disputes between workers and employers.
