CANVASSING IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
Hundreds of MA for Obama supporters will kick off New Hampshire canvassing next week. No matter where you live, there will be carpools in your area. We have listed a few locations below; contacts for regions are listed below, so get in touch with them if you are interested in CANVASSING SATURDAY JULY 12 or 19. We'll have more details soon about departure times, and where in NH we will be canvassing. South Coast contact Jennifer Golden masazarami@verizon.net
HELP US RECRUIT VOLUNTEERS!
The state party has an exciting new organizing tool that will help us access names of thousands of supporters in Mass. Each of these names is a potential volunteer, but we need to reach out to them to get them involved. The state party would love to have Foxboro host a cell phone bank to recruit volunteers? JThe sooner we identify volunteers from these lists, the sooner we will be ready to involve them in activities in MA, NH and beyond. NOW is the time to build our volunteer organization!
CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE DAY BY REGISTERING NEW VOTERS!
The Obama campaign is launching a major voter registration drive over the July 4th weekend. What better way to celebrate this holiday than by giving someone the opportunity to elect the next president. Kate Donaghue reports that the biggest effort will be near the Esplanade on July 4th, and we need MANY volunteers for that event. But there are other July 4th events listed below where volunteers are needed. And, if you want to register voters/recruit volunteers at an event in your community, just let us know.
HOST A HOUSE PARTY!
Whether you want to bring friends and neighbors together to share your enthusiasm for Barack and enlist their support, or host a fundraising gathering, a house party is a great way to build unity, recruit volunteers and raise money. Let us know if you are interested in hosting a hosue party and the state party will provide you with helpful materials and resources. If you can host an event that will raise a minimum of $2500, contact Jess Sommer at the campaign: jess.sommer@gmail.com

Paulson, Bernanke to Appear at First Hearing on Financial Market Regulatory Restructuring |
|
| |
|
Washington, DC - House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-MA) today announced that Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke will appear at the first of a series of hearings on the policy implications of the transformation of domestic and international financial markets, with a primary focus on the rise of potential systemic risk associated with the dramatic growth in the share of assets held outside the commercial banking system, the complex arrangements that link firms that are regulated differently (or not at all) and the increasing amount of leverage. The hearing is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 10th. The committee will explore the adequacy of current oversight and regulatory tools, and the extent to which existing structures are adequate to respond to future problems. Specifically, the hearings will examine:
- Current state of the financial regulatory system, both in the United States and abroad, and ways to measure and limit risk without stifling innovations and improve market liquidity and breadth.
- The implications of providing investment banks and others access to the discount window.
- In light of the collapse of Bear Stearns, proposals to improve the regulatory structure to better assess and mitigate systemic risk to avoid a similar or more serious crisis in the future.
- The need for enhanced capital and reserve requirements for financial firms.
- The adequacy of current powers of the Federal Reserve and other regulatory agencies to protect the financial system and the taxpayers.
The committee also plans to invite New York Federal Reserve President Timothy Geithner, S.E.C. Chairman Christopher Cox, other federal regulators, academics, economists and market participants to present their views at subsequent hearings later in July and continuing in the fall.

WHAT: Hearing: Financial Market Regulatory Restructuring

Recent Presentation: Claire Naughton and Jeanne Dyer made a presentation to the committee on the Ballot Initiative to repeal the income tax on June 16, 2008. This reckless iniitiative would have devasting impact on an order of magnitude not seen before. Sign up as a supporter at the Vote No Massachusetts Campaign website http://votenoma.com.
Recent Speakers: Cameron Kerry, brother of John Kerry, spoke at our meeting of May 19, 2008. Before beginning his remarks in support of his brother, he shared with us his concerns for Ted Kennedy and his family. Kennedy had just been hospitalized following a seizure. Respect for Kennedy and all that he has done for Massachusetts was in clear evidence. Cam then asked for our support at the state convention and through the primary.
At our meeting of April 14, 2008 we heard from two candidates for the 2nd District Governor's Council: Councillor (Democratic incumbent) Kelly A. Timilty and Robert L. Jubinville (Democratic challenger in the priimary).
We also heard from two Democrats seeking to unseat Rep. Jay Barrows: William Patrick Darcey and Devin Patrick Romanul. Darcey is a 57 year old retired postal worker active in his union at the state level and Romanul is a 23 recent graduate of Trinity College with a Political Science major. [Update: Mr. Darcey withdrew his nomination and has called us all to focus on the defeat of the Republican opposition.]

| Recent Breakfast: The Mansfield Democratic Town Committee were our hosts at their third annual Breakfast with Barney Frank which was held on Saturday, April 12th at 8:30 am at the Mansfield Elks hall on Main St. in Mansfield. His work on the House Banking Committee has been crucial. He gave excellent insight into the current financial crisis in the mortgage industry and we all left the wiser.
